An ever expanding growing space
The garden is an ongoing project developed, coordinated and run by Malcolm Cheape. His green fingers and skill as a gardener originate from growing up on a farm with a walled garden where his father grew fruit and vegetables. His artistic abilities are also on show in what he describes as a woodland garden and he manages to balance beautiful deep flower borders and deciduous trees with raised beds of herbs, vegetables and fruit trees; micro-herbs, tomatoes and cucumbers thrive in two busy greenhouses.
Research and development
Malcolm is constantly experimenting to see how different culinary plants deal with our coastal setting and strong winds. He researches the latest trends in restaurant gardens and seed availability and works closely with the kitchen team (Chefs Ruth, Kevin & Mikey) to produce herbs, vegetables, edible flowers and fruits for the seasonal menus. Our aim is to maximise the productivity of our own garden so that the vast majority of our produce will be grown on site or at East Neuk Market Garden less than 3 miles from the restaurant.
